Versione Inglese

Hi Tom, how are you?
We know about you from your videos about mountain bike, we read a smart paragraph about your beginning on video editing “In the beginning, «Filme von Draussen» was just a passion of mine. I captured my week-end adventures with cameras, edited it together and uploaded it to the Internet. And – to be honest, quite surprisingly for me, they became successful”. That said, can you introduce yourself to our readers ?
My name is Tom Malecha, I am a 38 years German, living in Zurich. After moving to Switzerland five years ago, I picked up Mountain Biking. I used to work in ad agencies as a writer. It was only four years ago, when I got my first Gopro. This was when I started to make films. In the beginning, it was only a passion, but last year it became a profession. I am working as a part-time videographer for an agency now, the rest of the week I dedicate to make films about outdoor sports as “Filme von Draussen“.

With ‘Filme von Draussen’ (‘movies for outdoor’) you have transformed your passion into job, looking back, which do you think is the most key-value aspect you’ve focused and pointed that out in your productions?
It’s probably related to my prior work as a creative in advertising: I wasn’t content with making films that llok good. I always strived to tell stories, to present ideas and to inspire people. I guess, this is what makes my films special.

How often do you ride your bike? And what kind of bikes do you like and you own?
I became a father last year, that makes it definitely harder to get a proper balance between work, family and riding, but I try to hit the trails at least twice a week. My main bikes are an Orbea Rallon, a 160mm Enduro, and an Orbea Occam, a 140mm All Mountain bike. But my basement is full of bikes, I also have a road bike, a freerider and a dirt jumper. But the two Orbeas are definitely the bikes that get most of the action.

26inch, 27.5inch o 29er ??
So far, I am all about 26″, but I am looking forward to check out 27.5″. I’m not dogmatic about wheel sizes.

You like riding, snowboarding, hiking and surfing you are an outdoor man, any of them give something special, but which one is on the top of your list?
Well, what I like about mountain biking is that bad conditions do almost not exist. It’s even fun to ride in pouring rain. Furthermore, a bike is a great way to travel and explore. But if you ask me, what I value the most, I must say, it’s surfing. I don’t get more than a couple of days on the board each year, but if you get it right, nothing beats floating along a thundering wall of water.

When you go outside to make a video, have you got a detailed list of to-do or just a big picture and let your instinct to over come to guide you? And when you do it for customers ?
Sure. I don’t plan films shot by shot, but I have To Do lists, shots that I consider to be essential for the video. A lot of it happens spontaneous, but a basic script is a must have, if you want to make films that are more than a montage of unrelated images.

What your equipment during video recording phase and when your are at your desk?
Right now, I am shooting with a Panasonic GH3. I am optimising my equipment all the time and ease of transport is my top priority when choosing my gear. For editing, I rely heavily on Adobe software, namely Premiere Pro and After Effects.
What do you do in your spare time?
Spare time? What are you talking about? To be honest, the past two years have been quite busy. When I am not working, I try to spend time with my family, ride my bike or go snowboarding.

Ok Tom, we have almost done… At last, from your standing point, what do you expect from your work when you release it to the web?

I’m kind of addicted to statistics and numbers, when it comes to my films. Thereore, I appreciate every comment and try to respond to them as much as possible. The feedback from the people out there is a real motivation.

Versione Italiana

Ciao Tom, come stai?
Dopo essermi spostato in Svizzera cinque anni fa ho iniziato a fare mountain bike. Ero solito lavorare nelle agenzie come scrittore/giornalista.

Quante volte vai in bici?
